University choices and applications

22/08/2016

This week I received my A level result. I got a B in English Literature. I have also passed my functional skills in maths. Now that I know I can take English again next year, I have decided to start researching universities properly now, as I would preferably like to take a course that is English and Media based. So far the universities that have caught my eye are:

  • UAL
  • Sussex University
  • Ravensbourne
  • Brighton University

So far the actions I have taken in regards to my university application is:

  • I have applied for the Sussex university open day on the 24th September 2016
  • I have also applied for the Ravensbourne University open day on the 10th September 2016
  • I have began to brainstorm my personal statement, and deciding what the main course I want to take is
  • I have also been volunteering this summer for Exposure, in order to boost my personal statement and to further my skill set in media.
By the end of summer I would like to have a rough draft of my personal statement, and I would also like to have all the open days booked in advance. I will be using this page as evidence for my research for university, and also as a platform to share my discoveries in terms of the application process and how I found it.

Today I began to plan what work I would like to finish before college begins. I have prioritised my university research as I feel that I will not be able to write a convincing, honest, and passionate personal statement if I don't really understand what I want to study, and where. I also need to distinguish the differences in courses, and figure out what attracts me to certain courses. I know I want to focus on the written side of media, such as journalism, as I feel it is a personal strength of mine. But saying that, I do not want to limit my options, therefore I think a joint honours in Media and English may be the best path I can take. so today I have spent the day reading through the courses that I am interested in, Sussex stands out me because they have modules which involve studying greek mythology in literature, which is something that has always interested me. I also want to be out of London for university currently, so the location is very ideal and interesting for me. I will hopefully have gathered around five choices by the end of this week, so I can then begin to draft my personal statement.

Today I spent around 4 hours working on my personal skills audit as I think that it will really support me in writing my personal statement. I spent time working on the section where I talk about more personal skills i have and my work experience. In doing this I realised that I have a good amount of experience that could really support my personal statement. I am going to carry the skills audit on throughout the week, and I also want to begin my personal statement by next week so i have enough time to perfect it throughout the year.

Today I started to draft my personal statement, so far it is 500 words, I have used the UCAS website as a basic guideline and my friends have also given me advice in terms of how to word things, and good points to cover. I have mainly written about why I am interested in the course, how I started to discover creative media, and my current college education. I have found it hard to discuss myself in my personal statement as I don't usually consider my own quality, hence why I am working on my skills audit, so I can better understand my strengths and areas to be improved on.

Today I finished the first draft of my personal statement. It is slightly over 1000 words, so although it is shorter than I anticipated, I think around 1500-2000 words should be a good amount. The only problems I have regarding my personal statement is that it is slightly wishy-washy, and is not as straight to the point as I would like it to be. This is a problem I encounter quite often with my written work. I find it hard to be clear and concise, as I prefer painting pictures with what I write. Obviously I have to tone this down for my personal statement, as it is a honest, and straightforward document detailing why I think I am a suitable university candidate. Bee is going to review it soon, so  I will note down the feedback she has given me, and use that to mould my statement to a higher standard.
