Final major project (Production log)

04/03/2016

Today i approached the protest site of "Sequoia" in whetstone to enquire about making a documentary of the people occupying the building. I spoke to a man called Nick, who runs the market they have established outside, and also helps to set up protest sites. He explained to me that although he was more than happy for me to create this documentary, I would have to chance my luck in terms of filming, as people tend to float around often, so it may be hard to get interviews. After speaking to him for a few hours he said he would introduce me to his fellow 'eco-warriors' so I could establish my own connections with these people. It was made clear to me that Nick had a court appearance with some of his friends, and they had lost the court battle, meaning they could be evicted within any amount of time. I was given a copy of the defence form Nick had written, and i let him know i would be in touch as soon as I had been given permission to do this idea by my tutors. After this I spoke to Bee and she gave me the all - clear for this project idea.

I went back to sequoia today, and although Nick and his friends have been evicted, they are currently camping outside with their market. I came to speak to them today, as I texted Nick asking when I should come and visit to which he replied "asap". So Nick has told me that they aren't planning to move anywhere until they have too. I also spoke to christian, a friend of mine who also occupies buildings with Nick and their friends. Christian is happy for me to interview him, and meet some of his friends, which is a great start. I let everyone know that I am planning to come down to whetstone on saturday and begin filming and speaking to a few of them, mainly to get a sypnosis of their situation for the documentary. I now need to consider sound very carefully, as we will be outdoors, and I don't want too much diegetic sound coming in.

Today I started filming, I went back to Sequoia in Whetstone, as I wanted to get some cutaways and establishing shots. Nick was there with a hungarian man, as Nick isn't too keen on being interviewed I filmed parts of his conversation with the man, mainly parts that I thought were relevant to my documentary. I haven't reviewed my footage yet but one problem I did encounter was diagetic noise, as it was very prominent as we filmed outside. I'm planning to get advice on how i can amend this problem. I filmed from 2pm-5pm, and I plan to visit them again next week.

I went to Dollis Valley to film today as one of the squatters (Christian) has occupied a shut down community centre to protest the social cleansing of Dollis Valley. I filmed him showing me how he got in to the building, and what he plans to do with the space. We then to whetstone to collect some furniture from the Earth market, to put inside the community centre. The sound and lighting was fine today, but my shots could have been more focused and moved around less. I met a man called Danny at Sequoia, and asked him to be in my documentary, which he agreed too. So i'm going to visit 'the hive' in Dalston to interview him. I'm planning to visit Christian once a week to film updates on the community centre etc. I was there from 1pm-8pm today.

Today I went to Dalston to visit 'the hive', a legal occupation that has become a community project.
I thought it would interlink well with the other sites I am filming as they are all community outreach projects at different stages in their processes. I met with Danny, someone who is a spokesperson for the group I am following. I bought a directional microphone with me to help with noise obstruction. One problem I encountered was that I was given a shaky tripod, but luckily someone lent me a sturdier one at the hive. I began filming at 3, and finished at 6:30. I conducted an interview with Danny that lasted around five minutes, and I filmed a girl named lidia who makes screen printed t-shirts. I think it would be good for me to branch out and get as much footage interview - wise with people, as I want to reach a broad demographic of people. I am planning to visit Dalston next friday as I am going to film an event they are holding, to cover parts of squat/protest culture.

25/03/2016

Today I went to Dalston at 7 To film part of an event they were holding called 'evolution cabaret'. I stayed there until 9:30, collecting footage of live performances, and the crowd. I interviewed a man called Ned to find out the purpose of 'Evolution cabaret'. One problem i encountered was that I wanted to do 'vox pops' with the crowd that was there, but due to how busy the rooms were I wasn't able to. To improve I would have bought someone with me to help me with the equipment ect.

Today I went to Dollis Valley to film again. I arrived there at 5:30 and left at 11:00pm. It was their opening day so I went to film what was happening and how the building had changed since I last visited. I interviewed Christian, asking him for any legal update of Dollis Valley, and what he plans to do in the future. I also interviewed a young couple that have moved into the community centre and asked them why they thought community outreach projects were so important. The only problem I encountered was with my microphone as it was coming loose while recording. I stayed so late as there was a problem with some of residents outside. They were young teenagers being threatening outside so we had to ring the police. Regardless I got two short interviews and plenty of cutaways so I was pleased with the footage.

Today I went back to Whetstone at 11:30 am till 12:30pm. I managed to interview Nick about the project and his future plans. He is leaving the site today due to a police warning, so I don't think I will be doing any more filming in Whetstone, although Nick may begin helping out at Dollis Valley so I can film him there. I got some cutaways of the banners before they were taken down, and filming went smoothly, although Nick was reluctant to answer any questions regarding him. He was very busy packing away so it was quite stressful organising the short interview. Although I rewatched the footage and I was pleased with it. The audio was significantly improved with the use of my direction microphone. I am planning to film once or twice more in Dollis Valley and once more in Dalston, then I will start putting a rough edit together and seeing if I need any extra footage.
